A specialized method of performing surgery is laparoscopic, or "minimally invasive" surgery. Historically, this method was frequently employed for gallbladder and gynecologic surgeries. The application of this approach to intestinal surgery has increased within the past ten years. In conventional "open" surgery, the abdominal cavity is entered through a single incision made by the surgeon. Laparoscopic procedures require many 0.5–1 cm incisions. Every cut is referred to as a "port." A trochar, which is a tubular instrument, is inserted at each port. During the process, specialized tools and a unique camera called a laparoscope are passed via the trochars. To give the surgeon a working and viewing area, carbon dioxide gas is pushed into the belly before the procedure starts.
